AC Airflow and Refrigerant Charge: How These 2 Factors Affect Performance

Published on: August 23, 2012

The energy efficient systems that are on the market today are much easier to afford than at any time in history. However, many people mistakenly believe that getting an energy efficient system will somehow cause more of a financial burden than anything. The true upgrade, however, is the ability of the air conditioning systems of today to provide a more energy efficient methodology of climate control without sacrificing any of the financial advantages of the less efficient HVAC systems of the past.

The energy efficient systems of today also require much less air conditioning repair than the older types of HVAC systems. AC maintenance is by far the most expensive part of owning an air conditioning system, and it always outweighs the expense of the installation.

In order to maintain the maximum level of efficiency for your air conditioner and to minimize the amount of money that you spend on AC maintenance, you must note the airflow and refrigerant levels in your system. These are the two most important factors in the life of your air conditioning system and they are the most important aspects of keeping your AC away from too many air conditioning repairs.

Below are the ways that airflow and refrigerant will help keep you from spending money on AC maintenance.

The Refrigerant

The refrigerant is the lifeblood of your air conditioning system. You can liken it to the oil in a car. It is the number one factor that keeps your air conditioner from breaking down more seriously. AC maintenance is much less expensive to perform if a routine maintenance program is kept from the very beginning of the installation package. Any air conditioning repair that takes place under these circumstances will most likely not be as serious or as expensive.

Too much refrigerant can cause the same kind of clogs that cause heart palpitations. Too little refrigerant may be indicative of a leak in the system. Because refrigerant is highly toxic, a leak in the system has health risks beyond the immediate comfort of the people in the living space and it should be taken care of immediately.

The Airflow

The clarity of the airflow into your air conditioning system will keep you away from a great deal of air conditioning repair. Just as the refrigerant helps to regulate the airflow between different parts of your system, the airflow from the outside of your air conditioning unit into the outside tower is just as important.

In order to keep the airflow into your AC unit as clear as possible, clear out at least 24 inches of radius around your outside tower. Cut trees that have overhanging branches as well.
