You want your Florida home to be dust- and dander-free, but it isn’t always easy to keep those airborne pollutants under control. From harsh chemicals to carpeting to pets in the bedroom, discover three ways to improve your indoor air quality.

Harsh Chemicals

To keep dust, dander, and pollen out of the air, cleaning is key. A casual approach doesn’t always cut it, though. To make your cleaning efforts count, dust, mop, and vacuum your home thoroughly at least once a week.

When you clean surfaces, be sure to use natural substances like white vinegar, citrus, and baking soda. Since harsh chemicals can actually contribute to indoor air contamination, you’re better off leaving them out of your routine.

Vacuuming can certainly help clean carpeted surfaces, but this type of flooring has a habit of trapping dirt and dust, allowing dust mites to thrive. Consider replacing carpeting with hardwood or another type of flooring that’s easier to clean with a broom and a mop.

As an added precaution, consider investing in a whole-home air purifier that can eliminate almost every speck of pollen, pet dander, and dust from the air. Some models even capture and kill viruses, keeping the family healthier than ever before.

Pets in the Bedroom

Even if you clean your bedroom weekly, pet dander can easily accumulate on surfaces, on flooring, and in nooks and crannies. To improve your indoor air quality in your bedroom, your best bet is to eliminate pets from the room altogether.

If that isn’t an option, make a point of washing bedding, pillowcases, and duvet covers once a week. Replace your HVAC air filter at least every three months to keep the air clean and fresh and schedule HVAC maintenance at least once a year to eliminate airborne contaminants and help your cooling system operate at peak performance.
