HSPF and SEER Ratings Matter When You’re Looking for Heat Pump Installation in Mobile AL

Published on: June 22, 2012

If you live in Mobile, AL and your air conditioning system isn’t cooling as well as it used to, it may be time for a new heat pump or AC unit. Heat pumps work by moving air around instead of changing the temperature of air, so they can help move hot air out of your home during the summer and move warm air in during the winter. However, choosing to upgrade your heating and cooling system is a big choice that can be expensive. It is important that you consider not just the cost of the heat pump, but also the longevity and energy efficiency.

Two of the best indicators of the quality and energy efficiency of heat pumps are HSPF and SEER ratings. HSPF stands for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor and it is the measurement of a heat pump’s efficiency in bringing warm air into a home. It is determined by dividing the amount of heat needed to raise the indoor air temperature to a comfortable level, divided by the amount of electricity needed to do so. Currently, the most efficient pumps have HSPF ratings between 8 and 10. The higher the rating, the more energy efficient the pump is.

The other important factor when you are considering an air conditioning service upgrade is the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating. SEER ratings measure the efficiency of air conditioning units. As mentioned, since heat pumps move air around, they can be used for both heating and cooling your Mobile, AL home. Therefore, the SEER rating of your heat pump is an indication of how energy efficient and helpful it will be toward the overall performance of your air conditioning system.

SEER ratings are determined by the amount of power that is used to create a particular amount of cooling. As with HSPF ratings, the higher a SEER number is, the more energy efficient the AC unit or heat pump is. Some of the most efficient heat pumps on the market boast SEER ratings of between 14 and 18.

There are several advantages to choosing a heat pump that has high SEER and HSPF ratings – lowered power bills, improved cooling and heating, and increased value of your home. By choosing a highly energy efficient heat pump, you are able to save money over time on the cost of both heating and cooling. Studies have shown that people who have a heat pump use as much as 40 percent less energy on average. Since heating and cooling account for over 50 percent of most people’s electricity bills, reducing the amount of energy required to do so can have a major impact on your power bills.

Another reason to choose a high efficiency heat pump is that it helps keep your home feeling comfortable during the winter and summer. High efficiency heating and air conditioning services are usually better able to heat and cool homes faster, and since you know you are saving money on your power bills, you can keep your home as warm or cool as you like without having to worry about the high cost of energy.

Finally, having a heat pump with high SEER and HSPF numbers can increase the market value and the equity in your home. Studies have shown that homes that are more energy efficient sell faster and for higher prices. This is because people are concerned about the cost of energy, especially in relation to heating and cooling. While purchasing a heating pump that is energy efficient may be more expensive in the short term, the long term benefits of lower energy costs and improved home resale value greatly outweigh the initial costs.
