Three Tips to Help Reduce Your AC and Water Heating Costs

Published on: April 25, 2012

Energy and water rates climb higher every year. It is important to take steps to reduce consumption of these resources. By reducing your energy costs for air conditioning and water heating, you will reduce your utility bills and have more money in your pocket. You can begin saving money during your next air conditioning repair.

Replacing an older air conditioning unit with an Energy Star certified model with a high SEER rating is the fastest way to save money. The higher a SEER rating is, the higher energy efficiency the unit has. There are units available which are installed to receive both grid and solar power. These units have SEER ratings of up to 24. Instead of paying for air conditioning repair over and over, replace an old unit as soon as possible. Choose a unit with at least a 13 SEER rating. Energy Star certified units qualify for tax rebates and incentives. Your air conditioning repair technician will be happy to help you with all the necessary paperwork.

If your water heater is ten years old or older, it is time to replace it. Energy Star certified models are available that use different power sources and qualify for tax rebates. These models include:

• High efficiency gas storage water heaters
• Gas tankless water heaters, also known as on- demand units
• Electric tankless water heaters
• Gas condensing water heaters
• Heat pump water heaters
• Solar water heaters

Many air conditioning repair companies offer water heater repair or installation. Some on- demand models will need a dedicated electrical circuit added to the existing circuit panel. This is not a DIY project; permits and code inspections of the work are required. Once installed, the units begin to save energy and money.

Maintaining existing water heaters and air conditioners will help lower utility bills while you save for the replacements. Draining and rinsing out water heaters will remove minerals and some scale buildup. Replacing the anode rod is essential for the heater’s proper function. If you cannot remove the anode cap by yourself, hire a company to do it for you. Set the water temperature at 120º to melt grease, wash laundry and take comfortable showers.

For air conditioners, clean or replace the filters on a regular basis. This prevents debris from entering the unit and coating the coils and electronics. Keep the drain line clear by pouring a cup of household bleach into it once a month. Have an air conditioning repair company perform maintenance on the ducting system. This will include:

• Repairing any leaks in the ducts
• Cleaning any debris out of the ducting system
• Coating the inside of the ducts with a sealer that prevents the growth of fungus or mold
• Inspecting, repairing or replacing the insulation. All of the heated or cooled air is then delivered to the house.
• Inspecting, repairing or cleaning the vents

The technician will tune and maintain the outside condensing unit. If the coolant level is low, he or she will fill it. Only licensed technicians should perform this task.

You can start saving immediately by following these three tips. Invest in your savings by choosing energy efficient products for your home and save even more.
