What is Passive Dehumidification and How It Benefits You in Your Tifton Home

Published on: May 9, 2012

Your Tifton, GA, air conditioning system cools and dehumidifies your home all spring and summer long. Routine maintenance by an air conditioning service will keep it running efficiently for as long as possible. New technology is available that cools more efficiently and removes more humidity than your regular air conditioning system.

Passive dehumidification uses heat pipe technology to cool and dehumidify the air. It works as a two-stage system, but the whole system can be thought of as having three parts. Of course, the air ducting part of the air conditioning needs to be maintained in order to have healthy air quality. An air conditioning service can clean, maintain and repair the ducts on an annual basis. This helps save money on the energy bill.

In the first part of the system, the air conditioning draws air through the filter. It must be cleaned or replaced on a regular basis for best results. The air moves across the first of the heat pipes. These are filled with a cooled refrigerant that pulls heat from the air. It causes condensation, which drains to the outside. The drain must be kept clear by pouring a cup of bleach into the tube every month. The heated fluid is stored in the third part of the system.

In the second part of the system, the cooled air is moved to the regular air conditioning evaporator coils. They are also filled with cooled refrigerant. Condensation and heat removal is repeated a second time. The fluid from the evaporator coils moves to an outside condensation unit where it is cooled by a fan.

In the third part of the system, the super-cooled air is far too cold for the inside of the house. It must be warmed to room temperature. This is accomplished by passing the air over the last set of heat pipes filled with the warmed fluid from the first part of the system. It is delivered to the house through the cleaned air ducts.

Perform your own air conditioning service by routinely cleaning or changing the filter and keeping the drain clear. You can improve your system’s efficiency by raising the inside temperature, using Energy Star certified ceiling fans and installing a digital thermostat. Your local air conditioning service can install the thermostat for you and recommend the right HVAC system for your home.
