Smart Thermostats Equal Winter HVAC System Efficiency

Smart Thermostats Equal Winter HVAC System Efficiency

It’s best to be prepared regardless of the weather. In the Southeast, we may have a heat wave in late October or have a week of rainy, dreary temps. So, depending on Mother Nature’s mood, be ready. For the greatest comfort and HVAC system energy efficiency, AC Southeast® has some suggestions for you…

Your HVAC System Messenger - Your Thermostat

Your HVAC system depends on information from your thermostat. When the thermostat tells it to kick on, the HVAC system complies. If your thermostat delivers faulty or inaccurate readings, your HVAC system could be overworking or short cycling. Thermostat technology has changed drastically in the last few years. Let’s review.

Dial or Manual Thermostats

These are practically antiques now. We suggest if you have one or if your parents have one, put it on your gift list.

Programmable Thermostats

These are a step up and allow multiple “modes” to reflect your household routines. If your home is empty on weekdays between 9 am and 6 pm, you can program your thermostat to reflect the lack of occupancy.   Program the temperature to rise in the hour before you return home so it’s pleasant when you arrive. Likewise, if you’re home during the day on weekends or if you’re gone all weekend for travel sports, your “weekend” mode can be programmed accordingly.   Most programmable models also include a “vacation” mode as well. We recommend you never turn the HVAC system off completely while gone, especially if you have pets. Instead, use the vacation mode to echo the lack of human occupants until you return.

Wi-Fi-Enabled Thermostats

These work in the same way as the programmable ones with more features. They offer connectivity via an app on your smartphone or tablet. Programming may become more unique, perhaps to reflect a different return time specifically on Thursday evenings.   Also, the settings may be adjusted remotely using Wi-Fi. This is convenient if it’s set to vacation mode and your plane is delayed.   Plans change? Change your settings from anywhere in the world with Wi-Fi access. In bed upstairs and it feels stuffy? Lower the temp from the comfort of your bed using the app.

Smart Thermostats

Finally, there’s the tech getting all the “buzz,” the Smart thermostat. It’s considered “smart” because after a week or two of manual programming and adjustments, it’s supposed to “learn” your household routines and adapt intuitively.   It’s important to remember despite the hype, it may not be the best one for you. Certain models pair best with certain HVAC equipment. Because there are several brands and models to choose, we recommend you consult with a trusted HVAC provider.   A member of their team can review your existing model of air conditioner, heat pump or furnace and provide thermostat recommendations based on your budget and your needs.

HVAC System Winter Preparation

The thermostat, of course, is just a helper. In order to achieve great efficiency from your HVAC system this winter, it should be serviced. Whether you use a heat pump or furnace, schedule a tune-up of your heating equipment.   We recommend a tune-up once a year for your air conditioner and for your furnace. Because a heat pump runs all year - we recommend a tune-up twice a year.   Contact AC Southeast® today to find a licensed and reliable HVAC expert in your area. A quality licensed HVAC contractor can help you with service, repair or installation of new equipment. You’ll enjoy the most efficiency from your HVAC system in no time.
