UV Lights and Air Cleaners Keep Your Indoor Air Healthy

EPA analysis shows that indoor air can be much more polluted than outside air. UV lights and air cleaners can help keep your indoor air healthy and your family safe.

What Are Air Cleaners?

An air cleaner is a device that cleans or purifies the air inside your home or business. Polluted particles come from many sources and have different characteristics, so there are different types of cleaners. Regardless of what type you use, the goal is to trap or destroy airborne contaminants and reduce unhealthy side effects of bad indoor air.

HEPA filters are good for particulate matter (the higher the MERV rating, the better). Absorbent cleaners handle VOCs (volatile organic chemicals.) Another option is ultraviolet light.

How do UV Lights Work?

UV lamps are installed in your air handler or ductwork. As air passes through your system, it passes through the UV light. Ultraviolet light destroys airborne pathogens such as viruses, mold spores, allergens, and bacteria by disrupting their DNA and preventing them from reproducing. UV light can kill contaminants and allergens that are too small to be captured by an air filter.

An ultraviolet lamp installed in your air handler shines directly on the evaporator coil. When warm air passes over the cold coil, moisture condenses on the coil, making the coil a prime environment for bacteria and mold. The UV light kills the bacteria that can cause musty air.

Improve Your Family's Health

UV lamps and other air purifiers remove stale air and eliminate indoor pollutants that affect your family's well-being. Clean air relieves allergy attacks and reduces health issues such as asthma, high blood pressure, and respiratory illness.
