How Refrigerant Works in a Heat Pump

Heat pumps offer an energy-efficient way to heat and cool interior spaces with one unit instead of an air conditioner and furnace. Just like air conditioners and refrigerators, they use the principles of refrigeration to move heat from one place to another. During the summer, they remove heat from indoors and transfer it to the outside. During the winter, they absorb heat energy from the outside air and transfer it indoors using a valve to reverse the flow of refrigerant.

Principles of Refrigeration for Heating and Cooling Systems

In a heating and cooling system, refrigerant starts as a fluid. It has a low boiling point, which increases its ability to absorb and release heat. As it circulates through the system, it passes through a compressor, heat exchanger and expansion valve, changing from a liquid to a gas and back to a liquid.

As it passes through the heat exchanger, it gathers heat and changes from a liquid to a gas. Next, it goes to the compressor, which increases the pressure and raises the temperature to more than 100 degrees F. During a heating cycle, it passes into the living space and releases heat. As it releases heat and cools, it turns back into a liquid.

Its final stage is to an expansion valve, which allows it to expand and cool. After it cools, the cycle repeats. To air condition, flipping the reversing valve changes the direction of flow so that the mixture absorbs heat from the indoors and releases it outside.
